I live in Minneapolis MN. We get our tap water from the Mississippi.
The city sends out a water quality report http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/water/docs/2010_Drinking_Water_Addendum.pdf
This doesn't tell me why the KH is around 3 degrees and the GH seems to be anywhere from 5 to 12 degrees and the pH is around 7.6.
This link http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/water/docs/2010_Drinking_Water_Quality_Report.pdf
tells me that
(Averages in ppm)
Total Alkalinity: 32
Total Hardness: 71
Total Residue: 191
pH: 8.75
Oh ok. So my testing isn't way off but why.
So this is soft water with a really high pH.
The last link also states "We add to the water a chemical buffer that’s safe and prevents the water from interacting with
the metal plumbing. We also maintain a slightly elevated pH in our water, which keeps it from reacting
with the metal."
I am assuming that the total residue has a few buffers like phosphate and what not.
It seems I am doomed to thrive in keeping South American fish.
I am a fool.
I don't know what to do.

What does your water test at out of the tap? It doesn't matter what the water report says if your tap test out fine.

the KH is around 3 degrees and the GH seems to be anywhere from 5 to 12 degrees and the pH is around 7.6.

I am thinking of getting an RO/DI unit to get soft water. I know the KH and GH are low but there are other things in the water "total residue 191" ppm.
