KH is carbonate hardness and GH is general hardness, KH tells you the alkalinity which helps stabilize the pH.
GH is the concentration of calcium and magnesium in the water.

In saltwater I do KH weekly to maintain alk for my corals but I have never used GH. Im not sure what you would need in saltwater. mgamer is a dedicated freshie though!

in fw really only need it here and there. test your tap water and your tank water ever now and then. tank water to make sure its stable which if you dont have anything in there to mess with it it shouldnt be a problem. the other is the tap water since at times tap water changes.
