What Substrate Would you Use?

I have used Eco-Complete, but would like to get other opinions on substrate set-up. I have seen the Pro's use all kinds of secret formulas of this and that and a pinch of this and a tablespoon under here,....

I am thinking of a lighter tone gravel this time. 4 gallon Nano, fresh water with real plants.

EC is nice stuff. For a lighter color I mixed EC red with PFS, I think it looks very nice in my Goldfish tank. Note though that over time the smaller grain PFS will move to the bottom and the larger grain EC will make it's way to the top. I keep that tank pretty well stirred up though.

IMO, for the average hobbyist all that pinch of this layer of that stuff is more trouble than it is worth.
