Rather than dealing with adding supplements blindly and having them build in unknown concentrations, I just do frequent water changes for replacement of necessary elements. I typically change 13% of the water every 5-7 days. I’m using Reef Crystals.

Is this a good practice for a reef tank or should I be adding something as a matter of routine?

you are doing the same thing that I`ve been doing for 10 yrs now. I dont add any supplements. IMO Frequent PWC`s are a two pronged effort. They dillute excessive nutrients and other problems and they replenish trace elements that get used up during the different processes in a SW aquarium. IMO keep doing what you are doing.
