I'm 100% for going the hypo route, but you really need a refractometer for it. From everything I've read, if it's anything more than 1.009 you're possibly doing it all for nothing. And you just can't get the consistency you need with a swing arm hydrometer. If it's a floating hydrometer, you might be OK.
If I was in your position, I'd get a refractometer on order from one of the online shops (drfostersmith, marinedepot, premiumaquatics... to name a few) and spring for 2-day shipping. It will take you a few days to get down to 1.009, so by the time you get close to 1.009 you'll have it. 4-6 weeks at that low of salinity without a refractometer might not be a good outcome.
Good luck, with whatever you do. You're probably right... you're stressing more than the fish - at least at this point. But untreated, ick will eventually win.
