I introduced a derasa clam and a cleaner shrimp at the same time about 2 months ago. All my research led me to believe they're compatible. They had been doing fine since. But yesterday I saw the shrimp pulling at the clam's mantle. He tore the edge of one of the clam's openings. I placed a protective cage around the clam, but today the clam looks bad: retracted mantle and open shell. Any advice?

They are compatible. The clam was probably sickly and the shrimp was just taking advance of a fresh easy meal.

As with most things in nature, if there is an easy meal anything will take it. From my readings, clams are pretty good at healing themselves given enough time and being left a lone. You may just have to play the wait and see game. Other than that, I don't know what else you can do to help it out.
