I know that after an ich outbreak, the main tank should be empty of fish for 8+ weeks so the parasite completes its life cycle..or something like that....is this the general rule for all diseases?

Mainly parasitic outbreaks to the best of my knowledge. 8 weeks is what I did after a velvet/ich outbreak. Everyone if back in the main and fine now.
I see most suggest anywhere from 4-8 weeks. I picked the longer period. Did not want to put my fish through that again.
Cheers
