Agree with Steve, or you may want to consider replacing the CC with sand, which for SW makes a better biological filter bed. Have a feeling that the as Steve mentioned the chemistry plus the injury did in the damsel. Understand that you did not know the alternatives about cycling the tank. FWIW, I was a FW keeper for a number of years, got rid of the tank when I moved and then decided to start with a SW. I have to tell you that I spent about two months after I had an idea of what size tank I wanted, researching and reading this forum for tips, ideas and advice on what would be needed to successfully start and maintain as trouble-free and enjoyable a tank as possible. With all due respect to you FW keeping expertise, SW is very different and I urge you to get a couple of books review the information there (there are some very good ones listed here in the reference section - by Bob Fenner and another by Paletta). This was invaluable to me in guiding me through successfully setting up, cycling and stocking my tank.

Hope all of this information helps. Please keep in mind that sometimes the responses may appear a bit condescending or abrupt, but individual communication styles aside, everyone sincerely wants to share their experiences and advice to help you be successful with you tank. 8)
