is it that common to get a mantis shrimp when you order LR from liverocks.com?

That would depend on how much rock you order. I had one in my 40lb shipment. Others have had none, or 2 or 3. You have to spend a little time inspecting and perhaps even dipping the rock on arrival. I dipped mine in hypersaline water 1.035 for a minute and flushed a few crabs out. I suspected two DEEP holes, into which I dripped some club soda - 3 bristle worms came out. I didn't get all of the crabs, though. There is a VERY HAIRY one in one hole, and a red one in another.

here are some links for mantis traps:

Quarryshark, if you'd be willing to send me that trap you would be my patron saint. I'm VERY interested in catching this critter and seeing what it is. It comes out in daylight even, it's just too fast for me to see.

I just discovered a second one in my tank. Small, but they tend to grow....

I may have killed it in a hole in the rock using a skewer; we'll have to wait and see. Otherwise I'll have to reread those links I posted and start trapping.

DISCLAIMER: I did not take the picture of the mantis that I posted. I've been collecting pictures along the way and really liked the one that I posted. I "borrowed" it from a google search of mantis shrimp.

I hope my links proved useful. Looks like I'll be needing them.
