Why do hermits lose legs? Aside from a water quality issue, would there be any other reason?

They can loose legs from fighting with others hermits as well.

Hmm...interesting. I had noticed a few stray legs hanging around the tank, and when I tested the water, everything was normal; so I was perplexed. The whole fighting thing never crossed my mind for some unexplainable reason. Thanks for help, though!
