Sick Xenia- not opening fully

I brought a xenia frag home about 4 weeks ago, it was fine for about a week, then started to open only half way.. I have done 2 w changes since, my amonia is still testing about .25 not sure if my test kit is bad.. all other inhabs are fine- 2 damsils a couple zoo's and palythoa, hermits and snails 15-20.

Also, I set up a GARF style 39 G with 65w pc's. I don't think I am getting enough filtration as my coraline is not covering all of my rock- lace rock with some (10lbs) live rock and 5 lbs garf grung. that stuff was added about 3 months ago, the coraline is spreading but not all over.

Any suggestions to increase filtration? I have an empty 29 G tank and am building an overflow box to make a sump- any filtration sugestions for that would help too.

Is that a single 65w pc? Is it 10,000k or Actinic?

If it is a single, I would say a bit low on the light. You would be surprised to see the conditions that Xenia has sometimes been known thrives in. They are sometimes found in sewer outlets in the ocean that are very high in Nitrates and Phosphates.

what is your ph and salinity at?

I dont think that you have enought light for Xenia.. Xenia Is realively healthy and you should not have an issue.. If your SG has that much of a variance I would suggest you get on that as It should never drop or raise unless you are doing it yourself.. Nitrates, alkalinity and Lighting is most likely going to be the issue.. Xenia also needs to be in a highflow area.. They can take a 200gph powerhead a few inches away.. i would not suggest that as it was just an example.. I would suggest putting it up as close to the top as you can get it and in a HIGH flow area.. I would also make sure that your nitrates are below 20ppm and sg is about 1.024-1.025 but raise is slowly not more than .001 per day.. I would make sure that it NEVER varies from this.. Watch Top-offs, Evaporation and Water changes as they are the only thing that should effect the SG once it is set.. I would also keep your temp between 80-84 with no more than a 2 degree variance per day..

HTH,
James

I agree with cj10488 that you need to up your salinity. I keep mine at 1.025 and I test it once a week to keep any variance to a minimum. Also try giving the xenia some more flow.

My xenia seems to like high flow avery once in a while. It has been the happiest with medium to light flow and a blast every minute from a 160gph powerhead. I have seen xenia grow fast in direct current from a powerhead.

Do you mean a 50/50 or two completely separate bulbs?
If the total is 65 watts, I would increase the lighting. I am assuming your tank is 24 inches wide. If so I would use a minimum of two 65 watt PCs.
