What causes brown jelly?

I recently lost a torch coral to brown jelly, it only took a matter of days from when I first noticed small amounts which I would siphon off daily as it got worse and a couple of fresh water dips in between. I have never experienced it before and was wondering what causes it? So far no other corals show symptoms. There was no recent coral additions and I have had it over a year. Of course i tested the water - amm,nitrite 0 and nitrates were 5ppm. Thoughts?

I would not recommend fw dipping any corals but softies. Lps and sps usually stress even more from fw dips and it usually kills sps corals.

Interesting. A lot of the info I was reading online was about brown jelly and torch corals in particular. I had also read it was ok to fresh dip them, the internet can't be right about everything I suppose. Thank you for the info...
