Just got a betta to go in my 250 litre tank with 10 tetras and a catfish, im just a bit worried about his fins. i bought him because i wanted a red one and his fins were the most kick *** looking ones by far out of the bettas in the shop. ive had him a week and they are kinda looking a lil more tatty, like they are kinda clumped sometimes and there is a bit of black around the back of his tail fin, i just want to get on top of it early if its fin rot
thanks!

Nice looking fish.
You are going to have to be more detailed for some help though. What are your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate readings? Test them all and report back. It also would not hurt to do a large PWC right after you test and then test again in an hour or so. If your ammonia or nitrites are above 0.25 do another PWC. If your nitrates are above 20 do a PWC. Good luck.

hm my ammonia has crept up to 0.25 in one week.. so i guess this is the cause for the tatty fins? im due to do a water change today anyway so i guess ill just do theat and see how he goes?

IMO .25 is a warning that it's time for a PWC. .5 and it starts to get toxic.

What is your nitritres and nitrates? Also, are you using strips or a liquid test kit to measure your water parameters?

ph is about 7.5 nitrite is 0 and nitrate is between 0 and 5. i have API master test kit too.

i have no idea sorry, here in nz noone seems to know anything about fish in the stores, just says fighting fish on the tank...

also, i had my uv filter turned off this week because my tank temprature was getting up and i thought it might have been that, will the uv filter help if it is some sort of bacterial infection?

.5 nitrite is also something to worry about. 0-5 nitrates means, unless your tank is heavily planted, that your tank is not fully cycled, which means its easier for fish to get diseases. I would highly suggest lots of frequent PWCs every day.

By the way, what is that tail type called. It has very, very full flowing finage.

Regular veiltail. Looks like a male.

salt in the tank? im new to this so ill just take it as some sort of special salt you add to the tank? will it affect my neon tetras or my bn catfish?

.5 nitrite? im pretty sure i wrote 0 nitrite and 0-5 nitrate, doesnt nitrate jsut slowly build up until you change the water and its the one thats not toxic to the fish?

The salt is not needed but can help.

Yes it can effect your bn and neons but if the dose is small they should be ok. You can buy the salt from your LFS. It should say for freshwater fish not marine.

A full dose is 1 level tablespoon per 5gallons of tank water. I would do a half dose. So 1 tablespoon per 10gallons. Dissolve the salt in a container of tank water and slowly add it over the course of a day.

When you do a PWC you need to replace the salt you have taken out. If you take out 20gallons of water you have taken out 4spoons (if at full dose) 2 spoons (if at half dose).

If you see any signs of stress with your fish do a PWC ASAP.
