Interesting. I've switched the small tank with hob to bare bottom and the gunk out of the gravel after a year was incredible.
I've had the large tank going three years or so. Originally gravel vac cleaned, now well planted. Every so often I put the gravel vac into the gravel and still cleaner than I thought it would be. But a fair bit of canister filter flow in tank with loaches and catfish going along the substrate as well.
