Has anyone ever seen this growth before?

SAE 3 years old, community tank with one other SAE, a pleco, some black skirted tetra and some rummy-nosed tetras. All healthy in same tank for 3 or 4 years. I didn't see this thing hanging off the back of one SAE until yesterday. Never seen it before. Has anyone else, or can anyone tell me what it is?

Looks like it might be a fish virus, Lyphocystis. Not fatal, just ugly.
