What does a fish's tail pointing upwards indicate?

Depends on the fish. Tiger barbs sleep with their nose pointed downwards, and the worse the water quality is, the more downwards it will be. Some fish flare and if their tail has damage it could look like it's pointing up rather than flaring out. Certain fish just have tails that are more upwards pointing than others, like some bottom feeders.

All my neons did this after feeding off flakes! Turns out they were getting too much air when feeding of the surface. I now feed pellets that sink and have no problems
