Really need help! Cycling of tank:)

Hi all, I've just washed my entire fish tank after a major catastrophe where all my fished died. I read up on this forum that cycling of tank is needed to start a water community and realize that I have never done so before! I suppose that's how the terrible catastrophe happen.. Can anyone help me and kindly tell me how the cycling of a tank works and how I should begin? don't really understand what they write on websites... Thanks!
