Aquarium Advice Apprentice
Last night I noticed my betta had lost a lot of his color and wasn't swimming around as much as he usually does. I tested my water and everything was fine with the exception of the nitrates, which were pretty high. I did a 25% water change and added in a little less than half a teaspoon of aquarium salt and kept the light off. This morning he was still the same (he was in the same spot as last night) and I was worried he had died in the night. I put a couple food flakes in there and he swam enough to gobble them up then went back to just staying still. Does anyone know what could be wrong with him and if there's anything I could do to help make him better?
He's in a 5 gallon tank by himself with a heater (usually stays about 78-80 in there) and quite a few live plants. My parameters from this morning are:
Ammonia: 0
Nitrites: 0
Nitrates: 40
Oh, and on Sunday night I had put a drop of liquid fertilizer in for the plants. Could that have something to do with it?
