treating my goldfish for fungus? help!

my orange goldfish that i've had for a while has white patches next to it's gills and i think its a fungs. so i'm thinking about treating it for fungs with a fungus clear fizz tablet, but what if he doesn't have a fungus at all... would the fungus clear harm my fish?

if anyone knows exactly what this is or doesn't think its a fungus please tell me. also any tips on how to treat for fungus would be appreciated just in case i do treat him for fungus!

I can't tell for sure from the pic if it's fungus or bacterial (they often look the same). QT the ill fish and treat with a broad spectrum med that will take care of fungus and bacteria. Just make sure to read the labels to make sure it is safe for goldies.
