Just thought i would make a little chart on some of the more deadly fish diseases mostly cuz im just bored and i like to know my fish ailments.
Pictures are from top to bottom Columnaris, Callamus worms, NTD, Fish TB
1. Flexibacteria Collumnare (columnaris)
A nasty wipe out your entire tank gram negative oppoturnistic highly contagious bacteria.
Treatment- Powerful Gram negative antibiotic, administered thru feed if fish are still eating is most effective. The best to use are Terramycin (Oxytetracycline hcl.) Kanaplex (Kanamycin sul) Maracyn-2 (Minocycline)
This is a flesh eating skin bacteria, so secondary "fungus" sets in and fish should be put into a hospital tank and treated with compatible antibiotic/anti-fungal combo for at least 7 days. Sucess rate is good with early and effective treatment.
2. Neon Tetra disease (NTD)
A equally nasty substrate living parasite that will wipe out an entire tank. No treatment known other than the usual formalin or malachite, tho usually does not work. Destroy fish and throw away substrate and stearilize everything in bleach.
3. Fish Tuberculosis
A rare but deadly fish bacteria that most often attacks fish in a weakened state. Also no cure to this one, and its transmitible to humans via a open cut or sore. Will result in sores on your hand, and you must tell your doctor that it could be FISH TB otherwise they will likely not know what to do. Antibiotics can help but it would take several rounds and is best to destroy the fish and stearilize everything. Fish will often display bent spines and rotting fins as well as open red sores.
4. Callamus Nematodes/worms
Another Deadly very tough to cure ailment, only this one is internal. Fish will have bloated apperance at first, followed by emancipted (flat bellied) before they starve to death. Red worms can be observed from the fishes vent (anus) at the later stages of the disease.
Treatment involes using Fenenbendazole or Levimasole de-wormers. Highly contagious and sucess rate is low.
