Any ideas?

I just picked up a small rock with some star polyps. Any idea what that thing is that sort of looks like a peanut on the rock? The colony seems to be growing around it. It feels hard to the touch.

here's a little better pic, but dial up users beware

I can't help, I think I've got some of the same, but I never learned what it was.
