Curious new growth - red & bulbous

This new growth, apparently being checked out by Mr. Hermit, started out as one small nub and has slowly grown and sprouted a 2nd small nub.
Can anyone hazard a guess what it is?

It does sort of look like the branching kind so far, so maybe not such a bad thing. But I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks again!
