What the bloody 'ell is this thing? Looks like, and is about the size of a Q-tip with a few spikes coming out of the top?

Looks like a harmless sponge to me. It might be an indication of high DOC.

Yes a "Q-tip" sponge.Very common in newer tanks. They are nothing to worry about. They come and go as time passes.

I have one of these too. Just noticed it a few days ago and it has been growing. It's about the size of a small Q-tip head right now. Very curious looking. I love to watch new things in my tank - just hope it's safe.
