Is this a clam?

This little clam looking thing must have come off my LF. Is it, indeed, a clam? There is a cocoon looking film over the opening. Is it probably dead? Does it need to be removed before it decays? Sorry I can't take better close-ups with my camera.

Could be a file clam, could be a mussel. In either case just pick it up and smell it. If it moves or stays closed tight it's probably fine. If it knocks you off your feet then discard it.

Gee, I like your method. Just sniff, huh I never claimed to have a logical side to my brain. Well, I'm off to take the critter out of the tank and see how he smells.

I would assume that if you have seen it open and close, you can tell it is alive.....

It was alive - now deceased. Did a sniff test. Didn't leave much doubt.
