Is this a sponge???

This has really started taking off in my tank. I was wondering of it is a sponge? I personally love that it is black- but I really want to know what it is....

Please ignore my clown. He is always in the way of taking pics.

It starts off lighter and turns black. This was literally about half it's current size a few months ago.
