Is this a sponge?

It is squishy like a sponge...it's brown and full of holes. Came in on the LR I ordered. I'd assume that it is dead since it was exposed to air...but it is really cool and would like to know more about it.
 
Def sponge. I had a piece on my live rock from LA years ago. And like you said, most likely dead. Mine stayed in the tank for awhile, but never grew and eventually just kinda fell apart.
Looked exactly the same though.
 
I would just leave it, it really can't hurt anything, unless you don't like the looks of it.

This may allow it to possibly re- grow, as most sponge is non-photosynthetic. This is a total long-shot, and probably won't work, but it's worth a shot.
