is it hard . i had some on some of my rock and now it is coved with coralline. i think it might have been a coral at one time.

update...

This one seems to be doing well. It is not in direct light or direct current. The individual buttons that make up the collection have "opened" up and display small short tentacles. Still don't know what it is, but I would not say sponge.
