I got this for my son's tank and it was labeled as a Banded Eel at the LFS. Most that I have seen have very sharp/clean stripes and this one does not look like that. It was his birthday and he wanted it, so we grabbed it. Name did not matter so much, but I'm curious. Anyone know?

Nice looking eel, although I don't know what type I do know that it isn't commonly for sale,I remember reading about it but I cannot rember the name. Try a Google search.

Could be a Snowflake Eel. Not 100%.

Not a Snowflake. It's a different pattern. They had a chain link eel that we almost took. I might actually go back for that and put it into my 240g.

I just saw something that says that the lines become less distinct as they get older, so maybe it is a Banded? Cool thing is that we got it for $35 and they seem to go for a lot more.

It`s hard to tell but sure does look like a snowflake. Wish I could see it outside of the bag.

That is definitely not a snowflake. The head shape is off, the dorsal fin, and it's missing yellow and it has stipes not a random black pattern

yeah, the head/snout is too elongated. snowflakes have a more stubby looking face.

I have had the exact same one! It is a Zebra Moray eel .. It's just a different pattern than the normal zebra.. Look them up on google images and they are on there !

it's not a zebra moray, completely different marking, head structure and zebras do not have the pronounced dorsal fin.
it's just a random moray eel, looks as if it is closely related to a snowflake moray, but it is certainly not a zebra moray.

I'm with PB here, Definitely not a "Zebra" moray but if I were a betting man, I'd bet that it's a "echidna polyzona" a.k.a. "Banded" moray eel. Search for pics of this and compare. (y)

Woot! A month in front of Andy. Making progress ;-) Thanks for the backup.

Yeah, I've been a little lax on looking at what saltwater threads were out there.;);) I mostly surf the "recent posts" sections looking for help needed for identifications. Somehow I missed this one last month. :hide:

This was one of those eels that used to come in as an "Assorted Pacific Eel" so we always had to look up what they were. It's much easier now with the internet when you can see pics of the same thing at different ages so you can see the changes they go through as they mature. (y)

I did not see all the recent responses, but thanks everyone.

I will see if I can get a decent shot at some point. It has just started coming out of the rock work to go after food.
