Once again my LFS has given me a surprise. This time my new mushroom 'rock' opened. Upon further inspection it seems as if the 'rock' is an oyster or bivalve of some sort. Indeed, this is 'live rock.'

It's egg-shaped, about 2.5 inches and the shell, though covered with algea, is striated.

Any ideas?

I assume it isn't harmful and will just filter the water?

Thanks in advance.

Looks like it could be a turkey wing clam. I think oysters like a cooler climate....I'm ot a seafood eater so I might be wrong.

i have a few of the same in my tank. They hardly ever open all the way, and feed through a filtering tube. I forgot the species name, i will go check on it if you want. They are fine though, (and a sign your LFS guy is taking wild rics, and thinks he is also taking the liver rock, or their distributor does) While these guys are fine, check what is groeing on them, as they sometimes introduce hydroids.
