some type of sponge?

These little sponge-like things have been popping up all over our tank. They a beige in color, bulb shaped with little "tuffs of hair" at the top. They are all popping up in places that have low light, so I am assuming, also, that they do not care too much for light. Also, they are about 1/4" to about 1/2" in height. I do not think they are harmful, but any help would be great. Also, my boyfriend is not too found of them, whether or not they are harmful, any suggestions for limiting their population? Some picks are attached, sorry if they are blurry. TIA!

Harmless q-tip sponges. Manual removal is the only way I know of to get rid of them.
