i have a few pieces of dead coral and after a few weeks of having it in there it started growing a brown residue on it. What could this be? Bacteria or algee

If it blows off easily with a turkey baster, then it may be diatoms.
If it doesn't, is kinda red/brown and slimy, and if you pluck it off and place it on a white paper towel; it leaves a maroon slick on the towel, then you have cyano(bacteria).

a kitchen tool used to baste turkey's....literaly....it looks like a really big eye dropper....it is a WONDERFUL tool for any tank.
