Striped Worms

Ok, today I went up to the tank and there are these two brown, black and white striped worms sitting on the rock. As I shine a light on them (the tank was dark) they move, one stretches out really far and one shrinks in...then a quick movement on my part causes both to retreat inside this little hole in the rock. So I turn off the light for a while and soon one comes out again, it stretches out really far and seems to reach its 'fully' stretched out self, these little round itty bitty spiney things are on the end that I couldn't see before, and then I accidently scare whatever it is, and right before it darts into the hole it puffs out a little wisp of 'smoke' into the water. What the heck kind of worm is this?? Feedback would be great.
