Can you guys tell what this is?

are they hard or do they retract at all?

I have never seen it retract. The red area is hairy as well.

Cool. I knew I had seen something like that before, so I opened up my Marine Invertebrates book from Shimek, and it is/they are Red tree forams. Homotrema rubrum. The book says they are just simple filter feeders and a good reef tank inhabitant.
