i see what looks like white strings on the back of my tank, wedged between the back glass and a piece of live rock. never seen anything like this before? what is it and is it harmful?

Do you have a pleco? Plecos are eating/pooping machines. My baby albino BN has this sometimes and has not caused him any issues or his tank mates.

Nope. And it's right between a rock wedged right against the glass. Looks like a spider web.

These could be the webs from filter feeders such as vermetid snails. Without a picture it will be hard to give an ID on such, but you could google this and see if it is a match.

Can't see it, but it could be a string sponge. They only seem to grow in very low light areas of the tank.
