The attatchments are large They are just clickable thumbnails in the posts, in deference to our dial up users...like me

To add to kevins bit about the photos.

Files with a physical size greater than 30kb will be thumbnailed. If your photos are smaller than 30KB they wont be thumbnailed. Just click on the thumbnail to see the full size photo.

You can always upload to the gallery and then link them with the [img] tags. Then you wont have that thumbnail hook.
