Nice shots! Those are pretty cool looking fish! What makes them rare (sorry a "saltie " over here)?

The animals originate from Brazil. The animals put fish eggs(spawn) to come to very few and only few through.

It many L173 and L236 on the market offered, unfortunately are it not the genuine.

Brazilian Exporters like to use L Number like L173, L236 and L250 for unusually marked single fish of different species in order to fetch more money.

The L250 is very rare to hardly find on the market if one offers over 10000 - 20000USD/each.

Dang, and I thought marine fish were expensive!

ATARI, you think wrongly. lol freshwater fishes are expensive. 90 - 100cm Albino Koi cost 500000USD each

When I had FW tank I had quite the collection of unusual plecos....I was never fortunate enough to get one of those. They are really beautiful!

There are also multiple references claiming that export of this fish from Brazil has been banned or discontinued due to fear of the natural populations dwindling, over collection, etc.

This has probably increased their price/value as well.
