HOW do you get pictures to look that clear?

I have a $500 Kodak Digital Camera, Every time I try and take pictures of our fish/tank they look like crap, I've tried standing back and zooming in, I've tried taking close up, Nothing seams to work!

hate to say it but I have had about 3 kodak's and hated them all! I use a cannon a530 and it has a setting on it for standing back and veiwing and it helps to make them clear like that!
