Pretty bettas, are you trying to breed them? They shouldn't be kept together except for breeding, and then only after being conditioned for breeding for a few days. They will beat each other up just like two males. Your female is already pretty stressed looking, that is what those horizontal lines mean.

Sticking them in a tank together (especially with other fish) is just going to cause stress. Look up how to breed bettas. It's a bit more complicated then just adding them to a community tank.

Mixing Bettas

All juvenile female bettas have horizontal stripes. As they mature, the stripes tend to be less evident or get lost in the overlay of the colored scales. (This does not apply to the Cambodian Bettas as they have no natural stripes.)
The female in this picture shows the vertical stripes present when the female is in breeding colors. She turned this color pattern on within 5 minutes of her seeing her future mate.

Georgieb45, If you are not seeing this pattern on your female, she is not ready to breed and shouldn't be with the male if you are serious about breeding them. It most likely means that she is too young (based on your picture) and if the male gets ready but she's not, you could miss the opportunity to remove her because the male will kill her.
Also, as recommended, read up on breeding bettas because these fish are not community tank breeders and rarely breed in a tank with "normal" water circulation. All you appear to be doing is putting the female in jeopardy.

This is my first betta male in years.. I used to keep bettas all the time as I was younger. I saw his beautiful color in a store near my school and felt I couldn't pass it up. Nameless, but he's full of personality and bothers no one (unless you count those times he flairs up at my red tail shark, but then he finds a distraction and swims the other direction. :P). He's never in one place and always on the move to explore his 55 gallons of water~

The photos don't do much justice, but hopefully good enough!
