There are more reasons why colour fading happens. Yes, the predator concept is one of them. The more colour the more chance to be caught by a predator. Water parameters could cause colour fading, lack of UV, etc...
Well, gene-play is a very rational thing. No matter if you're keeping wild- or hybrid strains, one of the phenomena of endlers, is that they tend to mutate quite easily when kept in captivity. Which also could mean that colour fading could happen. But it could also mean that the colours will become more intense. And mind you that of the 100% male offspring, a small percentage will lack colour. You're in need of a selecting procedure to keep the right colouration and pattern within the strain. This goes for both wild- and hybrid strains.

Wow, Teresa, cute blondie! Do you have any fry already? Do they keep on the same colour?

Hahaha... No one else named me like that before...
I'm known in Holland and western-europe for keeping and breeding livebearers and specifically endlers and wildguppies. In Holland at the events I'm called "the endler godfather" and even "Stan the endlerman". But that's basically it...

So, I'm honoured with the title "Endlers-guru"...

Nice thread folks, I've not done endlers yet, always planned to try them with I get my river tank set up as I've heard they will do well in a waterfall type setting. Very cool photos.

Well Theresa,

That's funny how you're showing this blond orange endler...
For I myself have been creating the blond red scarlet. It's the same endler what you guys in the States call chilli endler. But it's got a grey base and I've started creating the same one with a blond base for some years now. They've been distributed to other countries as well through the events where I've participated. They also went to the States. Mine look quite similar to yours...

These are also more profilic than the grey based ones. And the blond females tend to get larger than the grey based ones. Further on, they breed pure...

Once the males turn colour they tend to look orange till deep red. While it's a fact that chilli endlers have a störzbach gene and magenta gene, it will be most common that about 30-40% of the male offspring will have a genuine störzbach and magenta look. Which makes it much more metallic than the regular ones.

Here are some pics of mine:

Stan the King, so I was not so far of the truth! You must know (?) then AdrianHD of Florida...

Thanks for the explanation about possible reasons of endler's colour-fading! It hasn't occured in a new tank so far, so I'll see...

And those blond orange endlers look great! I add here just one of my long-tail classics:

Yes, I know Adrian... Must admit that I haven't been too much around on the american endler forum of his lately. Too occupied to keep track on all forums at this point. But soon I'll be more active overthere again...

He's asked me to join again after his new version of endlersrus.com was launched last year. And so I did...

Well, have you ever tried to contact E-pets? For I have! It's a czech company and they do offer rare livebearers as well. The only problem for me is that Germany is the only country outside the Czech republic that they distribute to. If I were you, I'd try to get some fish overthere as well. Their website is in german and not czech if I remember well. I guess, they also do business in Slovakia.

Thanks Stan, but local "flea markets" are fine for me. As I said, I don't have ideal conditions for raising more livebearers species at the time (&tank). I know one Czech-native aquarist-lady (google Raviolka ) who has long-years experience with livebearers too (and she has got other friends specialising in livebearers, almost from Czech rep.). I bought from her Xiphophorus montezumae and Xiphophorus pygmaeus some years ago...
