Like many of you, I am weary of the vinyl and paper backgrounds and want to experiment with 3D backgrounds. After looking over the numerous posts and pondering the styrofoam options, it occurred to me that the new faux stonework now available might be useful for aquarium backgrounds.

Has anyone given this a try? If so, are the faux stones safe for tank life.

I am going to pursue creating a rock wall to simulate the rocky walls of the Rift Lakes (my wife and I are raising Cichlids).

If the rock is safe (and there are many different types now) the weight of the faux is a real plus. I am exploring also the mounting surface - perhaps a plastic grid for flourescent lights, sheet of formica, etc. Any of your ideas would be appreciated.

Great forum and I have learned a lot from all of you. Happy New Year.

Your input would be appreciated.

Thanks for links

Thank you both for the links - the information was excellent.

I have made contact with one of the artificial stone companies and have their MSDS sheet. It looks promising.

I will keep the forum posted on what I learn.
