Aquarium Wood Cave (New Project)

For my next project i want the make a Cave / Cluster of Tunnels from a nice peace wood log.
The idea i have is to get / find a peace of Branch or log in the local river / Wood thats the size of about 10in dia by 14in in length.
Then pepper it with loads of holes of 2/3 ins dia (Approx) at many angles ...... give it the torture like boiling and soaking ..... What wood should i avoid? would an Oak log be ok for the job ? Anyone have any thoughts on the Plan?

Make sure all the bark is gone so it doesn't rot as well.
