Folks,
I have seen some really great ideas on the DIY forum. Whats the latest "invention" with regard to blue "moonlite" LEDS? I have a 55gal that i would like to install some nice blue "moonlites" for my shrimp. Any help is greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!!

I am currently soldering up some blue LEDs using an old cell phone charger and some resistors...i bought 100 high intensity LEDs off ebay for like $7 CAD...just found a LED calculator on the net to tell me what size resistor i needed

We found these strips of blue LEDs that you can trim down to groups of 3. They are on a sticky backed strip that you can stick right inside the light strip for the tank then wire them to a 12volt power supply. We're trying them out on the 29 gallon to see how many lights we need to give the moonlight effect.

Here's the link for where we got them.

Awesome--thanks for the feedback--Let me know how your projects work out!! I'll go from there!! Cliff ny

I picked up 6 leds in strips of 3, pre-wired and waterproof, and then bought a power adapter that runs 12v and wired it to a switch, cost me round $12 with shipping of ebay, and it works really nice

Thanks guys
Still waiting to see your pictures thincat
I think he was talking about my pics

Even easier, I picked up a string of blue Xmass lights, trimmed off the tops of the bulbs, then glued them into a strip of wood. no technical electronic knowledge or soldering needed.

i'm fan of the blue xmas lights...lol...i have no want to play with electric or setting my family on fire...lol...

That is amazingly ingenius! :D I've been thinking of doing something with my christmas lights, thanks for the tip!!

Good going all. Can I take this one step further. How about a all LED hood for fresh water tank. Would you use all white or would you use multi colors to get a wide spectrum of light. In a planted tank can LEDs supply the kind and quality of light needed. Or is it just simpler to use fluorescent light? The hoods I got with my yard sale tanks don't work so do I build or buy?

I forget exactly which colors combine for white light. (any drama majors?) I was thinking the same thing, because I also have an extra string of the multicolor lights. White would definitely work. As far as using them for grow lights... the LED grow lights I have seen use specific blue and red frequencies. I believe that the Xmass lights are white with plastic covering for color and would not meet requirements.

So Rob, why dont the hoods work? there are only three parts, the wires, the ballast, and the bulb.
