Can some one help me with a DIY sponge filter?

ok i know how to make a DIY sponge filter, but i have a question.

i notice how some paint roller sponge things have small holes inside of them. it reminded me of a sponge filter. i have everything for a sponge filter but was wondering if i could use the paint rolller, they would be new and not have any chemicals on them, just tubing and airline.

Isn't the inside of the roller a cardboard material? If so that would just fall apart under water.

nah this one is plastic with a bunch of holes about 1/8 an inch
