I know barton glass here is only around 1.50/sq foot

It only needs to be 1/8th" and "glass specialists" aren't that expencive, the guy was obviously giving you a very high number to be safe. give a couple places a call on Monday, you'll be surprised how cheap 1/8" plate is (and it will come cut to size).

$100 are you kidding me? and thats USD right??
I get lids cut and edged for $6 a piece from a specialised aquarium builder.
And thats everyday public price and includes knobs to lift them up with.
Oh and that is Australian Dollars, so roughly half of that.
Tell this guy he's dreaming.
But I did exactly what you said and cut up an old tank I had laying around.
Took the best part of an hour to cut the tank, and make and cleanup 4 lids.

The last window i replaced was 54 x 38 and cost $47 for 3/16 inch plate glass. That was beveled. Cost will be much cheaper that what you were quoted. Is main reaosn why I am going to build my tank when I have the room. Much cheaper.
