Computer Hutch to Aquarium Stand Conversion

I have this computer hutch I am not using anymore and was thinking about converting it to an aquarium stand for my 29 gallon tank. Any suggestions on how to reinforce it to hold the weight would be appreciated. It is made of oak so it is pretty strong already. I have had some pretty heavy monitors and even a TV in it before.

That would make a nice looking stand. It would be perfect if you could find a tank that would just fit in the opening. Id remove the slide-out and all of the shelves, if your tank is big enough. If not, you might get some 1x2 oak strips and make gussets to glue and screw to the underside of the bottom shelf. Then I'd use some more as "legs" that would carry weight down to the floor or, in the very least, o the bottom of the cabinet. The shelf and the bottom of the cabinet combined should be able to carry 150-200 pounds easy if that is oak. You just dont want it to bow over time.

yeah id get everything out of the bottom and use the top or something else for storage. then put like 3-4 or something like that and fit the boards in the bottom part. and if you can close it you wont see it but youll know that itll hold. or just full the whole bottom shelf with wood 8P. and forget to leave space on the top so you can siphon 8P

I would also lose the casters on the bottom. Unless they are appliance duty and secured real good I would get rid of them. If one gives out after you got that tank in there, could be disaterous.

But all in all I think it would make a great looking stand.

I'd cut out that little shelf and the divider that was for your CPU and frame out the bottom part like a tank stand with 2x4's, that should do it. Better safe than sorry considering I don't think there are many monitors or tv's that could fit in that space and weigh 300 lbs.

I agree on the casters
