diy 5 gallon pond filter - Aquarium Advice

how did you connect the hose to the [acronym:044d111c61="Plastic pipe"]pvc[/acronym:044d111c61]? im using like 1/2 inch [acronym:044d111c61="Plastic pipe"]pvc[/acronym:044d111c61] and cant get anything to fit nicely

and whats the 3rd hose for?

They have threaded to barbed fittings in plumbing section at lowes. The top hose is the input from the pump and the bottom two are waterfall and return to pond. The pressure was too much for the waterfall so we split the excess to go back to the pond directly. The ball valve is to let us adjust the pressure to the waterfall.
