DIY Denitrator what about this idea?

Was doing some thinking on DSB for denitrafication. How well does anybody think using something like a 2 liter bottle filled with fine sand. Cut a small hole on the bottom side covered with nylon screen to hold the sand in. Sitting on a crate stand to stay elevated from the sump water to stop buildup of nitrates in the 2 liter bottle. Then just use either a syphon or a dosing pump and pump water slowly into the top. Does that sound like it would work as a cheap DIY?
