DIY lighting with existing hood? - Aquarium Advice

I am using the standard hood something similiar to this :

for my 15 Gallon HIGH.

Is it possible to rip this one out, replace the ballast and change the lights to get something aroud 55Watts. I have no experience with ballasts etc. so please be gentle :P

That tank is 20 inches wide, so if you are retrofitting it you would be limited somewhat.

I used an ahsupply kit to retrofit my 10g tank hood with 2x13W CF bulbs. There are hoods you can buy online (current satellite, dual satellite, and orbit) that have more wattage (40 watts per bulb), but 55W bulbs are 36" long I think which would make retrofitting difficult to do.
