I plan on setting up a 30 FOWLR tank early in 2017 and want to do it primarily as a diy project.

I was looking into live rock on these forums and others and have a good understanding of the process.

My only question is what kinds of aggregate can I use for making it?
So far I've read:
Crushed coral/shells
Different sizes of sand

I was wondering what others have used to bring diversity to their diy lr as well as some good ideas (like spaghetti in the mix to give small tubes).

Thanks!

This isn't something that is very common. Only a few members have done this compared to the others who purchased either live rock or a base/macro rock and made it live through the cycle.
Outside of the recipe, I wouldn't use anything else outside of the main ingredients. You don't want to add anything that can decompose or degrade and leach into the water column to cause issues.
