DIY Refugium

I have read that you can put a shallow refugium above your sump. I don't nessasarily need a shallow one, but would like to know how this would be done. Any links?? Tips??

-50gal tank
-20gal tall sump / refugium.
-About 15-20 lbs of live rock
-60 lbs (3") of sand.
-2x65w power compact lights
-2x18w power compact in the refug.
-bak pak 2R
-3 LARGE feather dusters all differebt colors
-orange spotted goby
-fire fish
-12 or so hermits
-50-60 nassairus snails
-about 12 turno snails
-emrald crab

By above, I take it you pump water from your sump into the fuge and then it gravity feeds down. That is how I do mine. My sump and fuge are in a separate room though.
*180 gal Display, 100 gal basement sump, 33 gal refugium, 3x250 MH, 2x160 VHO actinics, zoos, some softies, LPS & lots of acros and other SPS.
*100 gal prop tank plumbed into main system w/ 2x96 PC lights and 1x150 MH,
